Mischa Thrace has worked as a teacher, a horse trainer, a baker, and a librarian and has amassed enough random skills to survive most apocalypses. She lives in Middle-of-Nowhere, Massachusetts with her husband, a one-eyed dog, and a cranky cat who rarely leaves the basement. She loves tea, all things geek, and not getting ax-murdered on long walks in the woods.

Paperback: 320 pages
Seventeen-year-old Seelie Stanton never wanted to be a murderer. But the universe doesn’t much care what she wants. She never wanted to lose her father, she never wanted a crush on her best friend Alyssa, and she sure as hell never wanted to know how effectively a mallet could destroy someone’s head.
Shane Mayfield doesn’t care what she wants either. When the former high school basketball star attacks her, she has no choice to but to defend herself. But despite saving her own life, she can’t bring herself to talk about what happened that night. Not all of it. Not even when she’s arrested for murder.
Forced back to school as a condition of bail, Seelie must face a very biased jury of her peers while she prepares for her trial and grapples with the repercussions of that night. The only thing keeping her sane is the support of her three best friends, but their bond is put to the test when she learns one of them may have played a role in the attack.

Where do you get your ideas?
Ideas are everywhere! Inspiration can come from events in your own life, interesting news stories, or late-night conversations with friends. Discovering ideas isn’t the hard part – the hard part is deciding which ones to focus on. I keep a running list of potential story ideas on my phone and it’s usually the ones I can’t stop thinking about that end up being worth writing about.
How long have you been writing?
I have loved books and writing for my entire life and always said that someday I would write my book. It seems that those are some of the most frequently uttered words among English speaking humans though, so I’m happy I can say I did it!
Is this the first book you’ve written?
It actually is, unless you count a few novel-length fics from high school which have (luckily?) been lost to the bowels of the early internet.
How did you get your book deal?
I really like the idea of working with a smaller press for my first book, so I researched publishing houses that accepted unagented submissions. There aren’t many, but they do exist. The acquiring editor at Flux was very enthusiastic about my manuscript and made the entire process a joy.
What are your favorite books?
There are far too many to list! My most frequently reread books are Watership Down, Hannibal, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and the Holmes canon – they’re like comfort food for my brain. My YA tastes are equally as eclectic, with favorites including Fan Girl, We Are the Ants, the Illuminae saga, and Undead Girl Gang.
